The National Association of Wheat Growers has asked President Clinton to work for approval of a sale of wheat and other commodities to Iran by the Niki Trading Company. The shipment would include 2 million tons of wheat.
Late last week, the Senate unanimously approved a resolution calling for administration approve of the pending sale.
It has been rumored that both Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and National Security Council Advisor Samuel Berger have agreed to a one-time sale, meaning it would be up to Clinton to approve it.
"We feel this is a crucial time for the majority of farmers," said NAWG
President Jim Stonebrink. "This sale...is desperately needed to help
support the low prices that producers are now facing."
