Michigan Agricultural Business Potentially Expands
June 11, 2002
The National Farmers Union (NFU), Michigan Farmers Union (MFU) and officials from USDA have agreed to work together on strategies for starting and assisting agricultural cooperatives and developing rural businesses in Michigan.
"Specifically, this agreement cites work among the three organizations to promote programs and activities that provide leadership and create jobs, particularly through cooperative development," said Jeff Moser, NFU's director of economic and co-op development. The organizations hope the partnership will continue efforts to advance their strong working relationship and to enhance the economic interests of Michigan farmers and rural communities.
USDA's Agency for Rural Development is responsible for administering various rural housing, business, industry and rural community development loan and grant programs.
NFU is a general farm organization representing nearly 300,000 family farmers and ranchers nationwide. NFU serves its membership by assisting with education, by providing stimulus and know-how to farmer-owned cooperatives and by presenting the organization's policies to lawmakers at the local, state and national levels. Michigan Farmers Union is one of 24 state and regional Farmers Union organizations.
