AFBF Denounces EPA TMDL Decision
July 13, 2000
American Farm Bureau Federation President Bob Stallman says the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to proceed with a final rule on total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) would "cripple farms, ranches and forestry operations at a time when producers can least afford new regulations."
Stallman noted that Congress approved a provision June 30 that would prevent EPA from implementing the rule and called the action announced Wednesday "a sleight-of-hand maneuver that subverts Congress' intent."
He added, "Farmers and ranchers have made much progress in improving water quality through voluntary, incentive-based programs. This progress would be halted by EPA's unworkable proposal, a plan that runs counter to many successful local initiatives. It will, in fact, result in much litigation and further delays in improving water quality."
