Glickman Praises Checkoffs, Still Wants Vote
March 1, 2000
One day after saying producers would vote on whether to continue the national pork checkoff, Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman said checkoffs in general are "very effective," REUTERS reports.
Glickman added, however, that he does not believe "they should go on forever without a vote." Glickman. s decision to call for a referendum on pork, after a petition drive marked by controversy, has drawn the ire of the National Pork Producers Council but the praise of self-styled family farm organizations.
