Campbell Recalls Soup with Metal Contamination

February 28, 2000

Campbell Soup Co., Camden, NJ, is recalling about 109,000 pounds of vegetable beef condensed canned soup because the product may contain pieces of metal. The problem was discovered after consumers complained to the company.

The recall is voluntary and involves 10 ½ ounce cans of "Campbell. s Healthy Request Vegetable Beef Condensed Soup." The product was distributed to retail outlets in Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas.

According to THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, company spokesman John Faulkner said five pieces of aluminum, ranging from an inch to nearly 3 inches in length, were found in three cans. None of the metal was ingested, he said.

Consumers with questions about the recall were asked to contact the company at (800) 637-7698. "Because of the potential for consumer injury, we urge consumers not to eat the soup but return it to the place of purchase," said Thomas J. Billy, FSIS administrator. "FSIS is informing the public so consumers who may have purchased the soup can check their cupboards."

Each can has the code "SEP 01 09279" and "EST 4K DEAL" (plus four digits indicating military time) stamped on the end.
