Steak Products Recalled for Possible Allergens

February 11, 2000

An Oklahoma firm has recalled about 211,000 pounds of steak products because the products may contain an undeclared blend of buttermilk and whey, known allergens. Serious reactions could occur to persons with certain allergies if they consume the products, says USDA.

Advance Food Co., Inc., Enid, OK, voluntarily is recalling the products with the label "STEAK FOR COUNTRY FRYING - Fully Cooked Cubed Beef Steak Fritters" in 2.5 pound packages.

The recall applies to packages that do not declare "buttermilk blend (buttermilk, whey)" in the ingredient statement on the carton and are marked with identifying code numbers printed on the back of the carton with the letter D followed by any four digit number or one of several specific codes.

Advance Food discovered the problem and alerted the Food Safety and Inspection Service that the ingredients were missing from the package’s ingredient statement. "If consumers find the recalled products, they should not eat them and should return them to the point of purchase," said Thomas J. Billy, FSIS administrator.
