FNS ANNOUNCES 2002 SENIORS FARMERS' MARKET PROGRAM

December 27, 2001

USDA's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has invited grant applications for the Seniors Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) for fiscal year 2002. States, including territories and federally recognized Indian tribal governments, can submit the applications through January. A total of $10 million for the SFMNP is available.

These grants will be used to provide coupons to low-income seniors that may be exchanged for eligible foods at farmers' markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs. Eligible foods are fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Grant applications should be submitted to Diane Kriviski of FNS' Grants Management Division, on or before 5 p.m. on January 31, 2002.
