Livestock Regulations Spark House Interest
April 26, 1999

Republicans and Democrats in the House continue their opposition to regulations on livestock producers, raising questions about policies proposed in the USDA-Environmental Protection Agency regulations on animal feeding operations.

In a series of letters, members have voiced "their concern over a number of provisions...including those related to water quality data, comprehensive nutrient management, record keeping, land application and technical assistance delivery," according to the House Agriculture Committee.

Members have urged that both USDA and EPA use "only the best available scientific data available" and work to "preserve flexibility in regulating animal feeding operations."  The proposed "Unified National Strategy for Animal Feeding Operations" is designed to minimize pollution from livestock feeding operations.
