Crop Disaster Program Announced
November 24, 1999
USDA says farmers who suffered severe crop losses due to natural disasters may begin signing up for cash grants starting Dec. 13. The sign-up will end Feb. 25. Farmers must have lost at least 35% of their 1999 crops to be eligible.
The fiscal year 2000 agricultural appropriations act provided $1.2 billion for crop disaster assistance. Eligible farmers will receive an advance payment equal to 35% of their projected total payment as soon as their applications are approved. Participants will receive final payments after all applications have been received and approved.
"While the economy in general is doing very well, American farmers are still feeling the pressure of low prices and, in many cases, the effects of natural disasters," says Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman. "This assistance will help farmers hit by disaster survive until conditions improve."
Farmers should contact their local USDA Service Center or Farm Service Agency local office for more information.
