Barrett to Retire from House Next Year

November 1, 1999

Rep. Bill Barrett (R-NE) will not seek re-election next year. He will have served five terms in the House. Barrett is the vice chair of the House Agriculture Committee and chairs the Subcommittee on General Farm Commodities, Resource Conservation and Credit.

Barrett served on the Republican State Executive Committee from 1964-66 and 1973-79. He was chairman of the Nebraska GOP and served on the Republican National Committee form 1973-75. He was a member of the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature from 1979-80.

"Deciding it was time to retire from public service has been one of the toughest decisions I've made in a long, long time," he said. "But when I weigh all the pros and cons of this job, I've decided that I"m at a point in my life where I'd rather start my day with `Good morning, grandpa' instead of `Good morning, congressman.'"
