Hot Dogs, Sausage Recalled Over Disease Potential
November 15, 1999
A Hawaii firm is recalling about 300 pounds of hot dogs and a Louisiana firm is recalling about 1,270 pounds of smoked sausage because of fears the meat may be contaminated with listeria.
The Uncle Louie Sausage Co., Kahului, HI, is recalling voluntarily the 300 pounds of "Maui's Own Hot Dogs." The product was packaged on Oct. 29 in one and three pound packages and distributed in Hawaii. Each package label bears the inscription "EST. 12449" inside the USDA mark of inspection and has a self-adhesive label that reads "1029996."
Consumers who bought the hot dogs should return them to the point of purchase. The problem was discovered through routine microbiological sampling by USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Abe's Cajun Boudin, Inc., Sulphur, LA, is voluntarily recalling the 1,270 pounds of smoked sausage, "Abe's Cajun Smoked Sausage (Pork and Beef)." The product was packaged in one and five pound vacuum packages and in 10 pound bulk packages that were distributed to retail outlets and in boxes of two five-pound packages distributed to institutional food service programs such as hotels and restaurants.
Each package label is inscribed "EST 13251" inside the USDA mark of inspection. Packages distributed to retail outlets are labeled "SELL BY 12-27-99" and packages distributed to institutional food service programs are labeled "SELL BY 11-27-99." Routine FSIS inspection discovered the problem.
