House Will Take Up Crop Insurance Reform

Setpember 29, 1999

The House of Representatives today will consider a $6 billion expansion and reform of federal crop insurance.  Lawmakers are slated to begin debating the bill, approved earlier by the House Agriculture Committee, at 10:00.

The bill will come to the House floor under an "open rule," meaning a wide variety of amendments will be allowed. The bill would lower many farmers' premiums by increasing the public share of premium costs.  Among other features, it would also authorize pilot programs for livestock insurance.
