Wheat Officials Urge GSM Credit for Iran

September 15, 1999

The National Association of Wheat Growers and the Wheat Export Trade Education Committee have asked the Clinton Administration to consider using GSM credit and other trading tools for U.S. commodity sales to Iran. Simply lifting unilateral sanctions, as the administration has done, is not enough to counter European, Canadian and Australian wheat sales to Iran.

"At a time when wheat prices are alarmingly low and surpluses are growing, it is imperative that President Clinton and (Agriculture) Secretary (Dan) Glickman go beyond recent administration action lifting unilateral sanctions to Iran, Libya and Sudan," says NAWG President Jim Stonebrink.

NAWG and WETEC officials believe the Clinton Administration will work out trading difficulties with Iran and develop a program to export U.S. commodities to that country.
